Growth that lasts a lifetime.

Tarbiyah is how MAS helps each of us grow closer to Allah, become a better person, and serve the world around us.

What tarbiyah means.

تربية

Tarbiyah is an Arabic word for increase, growth, and refinement. It is the same word used for raising a child: patient, caring work, done day by day.

Tarbiyah is the cornerstone of how MAS works. It is rooted in the Qur'an and in the example of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Real change starts with the individual, and from there it reaches society.

One person grows, then a family, then a community. Tarbiyah is a lifelong process. No one is ever finished growing.

Five qualities we grow toward.

Tarbiyah at MAS works to raise people who are:

  1. Islamically Oriented

Grounded in sound belief, sincere worship, and good character.

  2. Bearer of the Message

Living Islam with care and sharing it with others in word and deed.

  3. Agent of Change

Working to make things better for their family, community, and society.

  4. Exemplary Citizen

A trusted neighbour who serves others and adds good wherever they are.

  5. Lifelong Learner

Always growing in knowledge, skill, and understanding.

How it works in Central Indiana.

Tarbiyah happens in small groups, week after week.

  • Weekly usrah circles

Members meet every week in an usrah, a small circle led by a naqeeb, the circle leader. We study together, reflect, and look out for one another.

  • 30+ committed members

More than 30 members of our chapter take part in a weekly usrah.

  • Learning the Qur'an

Our learning includes tajweed, reciting the Qur'an correctly, and tadabbur, reflecting deeply on its meaning.

Join an usrah.

Tell us a little about yourself and we will help you find a circle. You can also become a member of MAS through the national site.
